Codino A.C. Divino's work is impressive and kudos his "gift of the eye". I chanced upon his work while researching a history subject I'm preparing, and found his website and his photography enthralling.

The above photograph by Divino which I selected, shows a beautiful contrast presenting Hong Kong and what she is "now" with the familiar chrome, glass, steel skycraper skyline we all recognize. The lighted background shows the imposing IFC (International Finance Centre) and behind it The Central Building, and the foreground, remnants of Hong Kong's "sampan and junk" past. The lighting Divino captures to draw the eye to the difference projected by the past and present images of Hong Kong in that one shot is clever.

Good photography, like music, like cooking, where you need the "gift of the ear" and senses, requires the "gift of the eye". It's not easy to acquire. Sometimes you have it and oftentimes, you don't. Everyone these days, especially with in-built cameras on their mobile phones can take just any old picture, but it takes a certain spirit to look and assess object, composition, colour, contrast, depth, lighting, gut feel and sometimes mathematics to come up with something astounding. Then on other days, it takes luck.

Of course, with technology and Photoshop, you can work further to add certain enhancing features, but then you're already moving into the realm of the artist photographer, and you do need to have the spirit of an artist to execute something remarkable.

The things we see everyday suddenly become outstanding pieces when a lens from a gifted photographer is trained on it, and the image captured can very well create an impact, and yes, move you.

Give me great visuals any time.
